Comprehensive credit checks provide detailed information on any previous judgments, consumer notices, defaults, debt reviews, and credit or payment disputes.

Credit Check Regulations and Compliance under the National Credit Act:

Regulation 18 (4) of the National Credit Act states that credit checks should be done for the following purposes:
• Under certain controlled circumstances, for fraud detection and fraud prevention services
• Considering a candidate for employment in a position that requires trust and honesty and entails the handling of cash or finances (Regulation 18 (4)(c)).

Section 18(5) of the National Credit Regulations states that should a report be required for a purpose set out in section 18 (4)(c), the consent of the consumer must be obtained prior to the report being requested. The National Credit Act Amendment 19 of 2014 (NCAA) further indicates that a valid job description must be in place that stipulates the requirement of trust and honesty in the handling of cash or finances, if a Consumer Credit check is requested for this purpose.

Job descriptions should be available and at all times and abide to the above prior to conducting a credit check.
